Choosing a whisky gift

Start with their taste, then choose the presentation.

Ask what they already enjoy

If you can, find out which bottles they buy for themselves. Note the name and the style described on the label. A familiar favourite can be a thoughtful gift; something unusual is a better choice when you know what they like.

Read the description carefully

Use the maker’s tasting notes as a starting point. Look for flavours the recipient enjoys rather than assuming an older or more expensive bottle will be their favourite. We do not claim to have tasted the bottles shown in retailer searches.

Compare like with like

Check the bottle size, alcohol strength and whether gift packaging is included. A miniature collection, a full bottle and a glass-and-bottle set are different gifts, even when the photographs look similar.

Check the delivery details

Confirm the seller, delivery estimate for the recipient’s address and any age-verification requirements. If the gift is a surprise, check the retailer’s options for a gift message and packaging.
